Yes, at one time or another everyone asks themselves "why am I here?" The problem with that question is there's rarely a clear answer. And even if you find an answer that feels true, it can shift over time.
As a coach, I've seen people of all ages asking that question. I catch myself asking it from time to time (though my version is often "why am I still here?").
I'd like to offer a more powerful question.
First, start with an assertion: "I AM here!"
To an immortal, this may seem like a silly or self-evident statement. But to a Mortal, it's both a declaration and an opportunity to step into a state of gratitude. After all, as Mortals we know that we were not owed the right to wake up today. So we're grateful for the gift.
And that leads into the second part - the actual question:
"How am I going to make use of the gift of today?"
Shifting my focus from "what is the meaning of my life" to "how am I choosing to live this day" does two things:
First, it takes the pressure off. It's not about defining my entire life, it's about choosing my day.
And second, it helps me to actively live life by focusing on the choices I make rather than some grand, passive sense of meaning.
Give it a shot and see the difference it makes for you. Start your day tomorrow with:
“I AM here! How am I going to make use of the gift of today?”
